Age - 11w4d 2 inches in size

At this stage the heart could be seen beating very clearly, pulsing at 168 bpm. At least the baby will like techno music.

The following images are from our first ultrasound scan:

View showing full body.  You can make out features of the face and an arm.

View from the side.  You can see it's arm outstretched above the "chin".  This was taken while the baby was stretching.
thumb
The best view.  You can clearly make out both arms and part of it's legs.

On 9.14.01 we had more ultrasound pictures taken.

The baby is now at about 17 weeks and is much more clearly defined as these pictures will illustrate.

Here the baby is clearly visible.  Skull, both hands (scratching the ear) and leg are very defined.

From underneath, looking up.  You can easily see the baby's spine and ribs.

Boy or Girl

Do you want to know if it's a BOY or a GIRL?

Are you ABSOLUTELY sure you want to know?

Studies have shown that most people feel disappointed and suffer from guilt after finding out the sex of a baby prior to birth.

If you feel you can live with yourself, advance to the next page.

This is your last chance.

NO!  I feel I will not be able to live with myself!

Please help me take my mind off this painful decision!

January 25, 2002

On January 25th Yvonne's doctor recommended an ultrasound to make sure the baby was developing properly.  Yvonne had been showing signs of preeclampsia and was on bed-rest.  We were thrilled at the idea of seeing the baby so close to the due date.  We wondered if we could videotape it but the paperwork said no.  At the session I asked the technician if we could get images printed out.  She said we could.  During the course of the exam we saw many wonderful views of the baby, including a clear-as-day shot of it's nose and mouth from the front.  She took a picture of this and a dozen other good ones. You'd think we'd get a copy, wouldn't you.
This is all we got:

Just that one image. Don't be stingy on the heat paper, Doc.  At least Blank is clearly a movie buff as it does an interpretation of the 2010 movie poster.

2010's Star Child Blank Gutierrez

Despite our lack of decent images it was quite a marvel to see.  You could still see the heart, brain, and various organs.  One thing I didn't realize is that the ultrasound machine acts almost like a light source.  On seeing the ribs it appeared as if they were lit up from behind and shadows could be seen.  Like venetian blinds in a cheesy 80s video.

The latest, and probably final, ultrasound shots

thumb
The best shot we've been able to get of the baby's face.  Lying on it's side, the eyes are in the middle with the mouth to the left.
thumb
A shot of the baby's hand.  Not particularly clear, but if you stare at it enough the hand and curled fingers become apparent.  Or maybe not.
